What happens if you want to rest your arms on the steering wheel?

As I first saw this picture I thought someone made a joke. Indeed it is a real steering wheel used in racing cars. Thinking about it, it makes kind of sense. In that high speed the guys are driving around the track you surely would not like to remove a hand from the steering wheel e.g. to adjust the air-condition. Further the driver’s surely do not have a need to rest their arms on the steering wheel rather they keep both hands on it to keep on track.
